What is the 2020 Census?

The census is an opportunity the US government gives us once every 10 years to acknowledge our presence in our respective communities to better cater federal

funding to our needs while helping to create statistics about the country’s population and unique demographic!

Why should you care?

Federal funding for education and schooling, police and fire departments, medical and healthcare facilities, emergency relief, and other state departments corresponds to the number of people who fill out the census in your area! Therefore, your participation is important to make sure that funding is adequate for the size of your community.

Likewise, the districting of communities for seats in the US House of Representatives is based on state population relative to Census responses! So again, the more people in your area who fill out the Census, the better your state’s representation in the US congress will be.

How to fill out the Census?

Filling out the census form is very simple and shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes!

The Census questionnaire helps collect your information as of April 1st of this year to  update the public record for the next 10 years.

Every address in the US should have received census documents in March, but if you didn’t you can visit www.census.gov for more information.

You can easily fill out the Census questionnaire online, by mail, or over the phone- whichever way is more convenient for you! Remember that only one census form is required per household!

What will the Census Ask?

The census questions will ask about the people in your household: the type of home you have, your ownership status, as well as the ages and genders of those in your home to help appropriately allocate government funding and produce policy that takes into account the diverse population.

You will also be asked about your race on the Census. If you do not identify with any of the racial categories listed, we encourage you to check ‘other’ and write in the racial or ethnic category you identify with most. The more people choose the ‘other’ box the better chance we have to advocate for more representative boxes in the future census.

Who needs to fill out the Census?

Anyone residing in the United States! Do not worry about your immigration or citizenship status! The census form does not ask this question. Rather, it wishes to count you as an individual living in your community that is in need of resources and equal representation! The Federal Bureau in charge of collecting the Census data protects your answers and will keep them 100% confidential!
