CAIR-NJ Attorney Jay Rehman Recognized by New Jersey Governor with Leadership Award
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 5/10/18) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today welcomed the recognition of Staff Attorney Jay Rehman by Governor Phil Murphy.
In a ceremony held on May 8 at Drumthwacket, the governor’s official residence in Princeton, the governor presented Rehman with the 2018 Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month award for his leadership and bravery in representing the Muslim community.
“As some elected officials inflame anti-Muslim sentiment to score political points, it is refreshing to see that New Jersey celebrates its Muslim community,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues.
Sues said Rehman, 33, joined CAIR-NJ in 2017.
Inspired by the events following the implementation of the Trump administration’s Muslim Ban, Rehman vowed that he would use his law degree to fight the administration’s Islamophobic policies.
CAIR launched an app to share critical “know your rights” information and to simplify the process to report hate crimes and bias incidents. CAIR is urging American Muslims and members of other minority groups to download the app and utilize this resource to stay informed and empowered.
