CAIR-NJ Seeks Hate Crime Probe of Shooting Death of Sikh Gas Station Owner

(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 6/1/16) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today called on state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for the shooting death of Davinder Singh, 47, who was shot at the Power Gas Station on West Market Street in Newark, N.J., sometime before 4:25 p.m. Monday.

Singh's son, Jatinder Singh, said that there was no robbery or struggle, and that a man approached his father and shot him at point blank range. Police said Singh, of Iselin, was pronounced dead at University Hospital shortly before 4:45 p.m.

“The lack of any other clear motive for this heinous crime and the fact that Mr. Singh wore a turban may point to a possible bias motive. This attack comes at a time of an unprecedented rise in hate incidents targeting Muslims and those perceived to be Muslims,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director James Sues. “We call on local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for this murder and to bring the perpetrator to justice.”

[NOTE: Sikh men who wear beards and turbans as part of their faith are often targeted by bigots who mistake them for Muslims.]

CAIR has in the past spoken out against bias-motivated attacks on American Sikhs.

CAIR-NJ Welcomes Resignation of Board of Education Member Who Posted Racist, Anti-Muslim Messages

(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, N.J., 4/22/16) – The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ) today welcomed the resignation of  Elmwood Park Board of Education member Gladys Gryskiewicz after she reportedly posted a series of racist and Islamophobic messages on her personal Facebook account.

One post urged Muslims to "(s)tay in your desserts [sic] and follow your religion in your own countries." Another post declared, "The French told them to get lost and this is what our President should do," and continued, "Go back to your own country; America needs to get rid of people like you."

Earlier this month, CAIR-NJ joined state lawmakers and school officials in calling for her resignation.

“Ms. Gryskiewicz’s resignation is really the best outcome in terms of the quality of the educational experience of the minority students of the Elmwood Park School District,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director, James Sues.  “It’s unfortunate that Ms. Gryskiewicz would cite safety concerns when there is no evidence that her family is in any kind of danger.  This is further evidence of her bigoted view of the world in that it implies that minorities are prone to violence.”

CAIR offers a booklet, called "An Educator's Guide to Islamic Religious Practices," designed to help school officials provide a positive learning environment for Muslim students.

“Bigoted statements like those reportedly made by Ms. Gryskiewicz are extremely offensive and demonstrate a level of intolerance that should disqualify her from serving on any organization overseeing the education of children,” said CAIR-NJ Executive Director, James Sues. “We applaud Elmwood Park Memorial High School Principal David Warner and other school district leaders for taking a stand against bigotry.”
