NEW BRUNSWICK — Those in danger of going hungry this holiday season will get help today from the local Islamic community.

The Islamic Circle of North America is holding a Zabiha meat distribution in conjunction with the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha. Zabiha refers to the ritual slaughter of an animal, which on Eid al-Adha is done to mark the prophet Abraham's slaughter of an animal.

"Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice his own son as a test and when he was willing to do that, God agreed to replace him with an animal instead of the son," said Tariq Zamir, an organizer of the event.

PLAINFIELD — In one hand Victor Bastidas held the hand of his 3-year-old son, Kerbin. In the other he clutched a blue plastic bag full of fresh meat.

The cold, rainy, wind-swept walk through the city's downtown proved to be well worth the trip.

Bastidas, a native of Ecuador, said that he has been looking for work lately, but with no success. Making ends meet in order to afford living in a small East Front Street apartment is difficult, he said, but his family, which also includes a wife and daughter, was looking forward to a hot meal, he added.

"It's dinner," he said, glancing at the bag with a broad smile.

Alexandria sixth-graders move past Islam flap, but bloggers still fired up

ALEXANDRIA TWP. — While the controversy over a sixth-grade social studies unit on Islam continues to rage among parents in online blogs, teacher Brian McGrath and his 70 or so students have moved on.

Parents, teachers and school officials filled the middle school library on Nov. 23 to discuss the curriculum and the recently adopted textbook that many parents claimed is inaccurate, offensive or beyond the intellectual sophistication of the students in its discussion of Islam and Muslim culture. The controversy followed an assignment in which students were asked to create a mini-Quran, the Muslim bible, and write an essay on what Islam meant to them.

While emotions ran high, the discussion led by Superintendent Dr. Matthew Jennings was civil.

At the end, Jennings told parents that a formal complaint against specific aspects of the book or of the curriculum would be evaluated by a committee of teachers, administrators, board members and at least one community member. The committee could recommend action to the school board.

The next round in the fight over whether a popular Muslim cleric and his family remain in the United States is scheduled for February, when his attorney and lawyers for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are to meet with an immigration judge in Newark.

The judge, Alberto Reifkohl, had the case returned to him by the Board of Immigration Appeals, which reviewed a 2008 decision by Reifkohl to grant Mohammad Qatanani, who is the spiritual leader of the Islamic Center of Passaic County in Paterson, permanent U.S. residency. Homeland Security opposed the ruling, alleging that the imam once had ties to Hamas, classified as a terrorist group by the United States.

"The meeting will be a procedural one to see what step to take next," said Qatanani's attorney, Claudia Slovinsky of Manhattan. "He may ask for more testimony, or let [his decision] stand. But he indicated that everything should be finished by June."
