CAIR-NJ Commends Governor-Elect Phil Murphy for Nominating Muslim Department of Health Commissioner
(SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ, 1/10/2017) -- The New Jersey chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NJ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today commended Governor-elect Phil Murphy for nominating Veterans Affairs Department official Dr. Shereef Elnahal, a Muslim American, for the position of Department of Health Commissioner.
If confirmed, Dr. Elnahal would be New Jersey’s first Muslim cabinet official.

“We are encouraged to see that Governor-elect Murphy is embracing the diversity of New Jersey by reflecting that diversity in his cabinet,” said James Sues, executive director of CAIR-NJ. “His nomination of Dr. Shereef Elnahal as the state’s first Muslim cabinet official is representative of the governor-elect’s efforts to give all state residents a voice in his government, and he should surely be applauded for that.”
The governor-elect announced his nomination for Department of Health Commissioner in a press release this morning.
